What is a Required Minimum Distribution (RMD)?

An RMD is the minimum amount you must withdraw annually from your tax-deferred retirement accounts (Traditional IRA, 401(k), 403(b)) starting at age 73 under SECURE Act 2.0.

Key Facts:
  • Start age: 73 (for those born 1951-1959). Rising to 75 starting in 2033.
  • Penalty for missing: 25% excise tax on the amount not withdrawn (reduced from 50%).
  • Calculation: Account balance (Dec 31 of prior year) divided by your life expectancy factor from the IRS Uniform Lifetime Table.
  • Roth IRAs: Not subject to RMDs during the owner's lifetime.
